State Street and PeerNova Trial New Blockchain Prototype for Capital Tracking Bitcoin Babe News

http://ift.tt/2cmbyrH

PeerNova and State Street have been trialing a blockchain-enabled platform for the tracking and monitoring the flow of funds. The two partners anticipate completing all the relevant milestones by October 2016 and will eventually move forward to a pilot phase right after the trial, Gangesh Ganesan, CTO and co-founder of PeerNova told Bitcoin Magazine.

The trial program uses PeerNova’s technology Cuneiform, a big data platform designed to support the speed and scale required by large financial institutions, while incorporating key characteristics of blockchain technology including immutability, verifiability and security.

The trial aims at assessing the potential of blockchain technology to track the lineage of capital with greater certainty than traditional infrastructures.

Custodial banks manage trillions of dollars of invested capital on behalf of their clients. These include asset managers, asset owners, insurers, official institutions, hedge funds and private equity funds. The new platform could provide State Street’s clients with more transparent, timely and auditable reporting methods.

Hu Liang, senior vice president of the Emerging Technologies Center at State Street, said in a media release that tracking the flow of investment capital was critical for fund managers, particularly to calculate the performance of their investments.

He noted that if the trial proves to be a success, the potential to provide this higher degree of precision and verifiability would bring “meaningful value” to thei clients.

State Street, a leading provider of financial services, started actively exploring blockchain in late 2015 when it joined R3’s blockchain consortium and separately launched a number of experiments with blockchain, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Liang said at that time that blockchain technology could be a real game changer, substantially transforming how financial transactions are recorded, reconciled and reported — all with additional security, lower error rates and significant cost reductions.

A report by Santander InnoVentures claims that blockchain technology could help banks save between US$15-20 billion per annum in infrastructure costs.

While blockchain technology may hold great promise for the financial services industry, there are still a number of challenges to overcome before reaching widespread adoption. A report by the World Economic Forum released in August suggests that updating financial infrastructure through distributed ledger technology will require a significant amount of resources, as well as deep collaboration between incumbents, innovators and regulators.

“Most blockchain initiatives that we have heard of involve changing all existing approaches — changing the infrastructure, workflows, platform, protocols, etc.,” said Ganesan.

“In large financial institutions, it’s very difficult — sometimes impossible — to make such wholesale changes. Hence, blockchain adoption in mission-critical applications has been slow. PeerNova’s approach has been to figure out how to ensure that our platform can co-exist with legacy systems, applications, workflows, etc. and yet offer significant benefits, even in such mission-critical applications.”

Besides State Street, Ganesan said that the company has had similar engagements with several other financial institutions. “All of them are based on distributed ledger applications using our Cuneiform platform,”...

China’s Increasing Debt Burden Could Affect the Bitcoin Economy Bitcoin News

According to the Bank for International Settlements’ credit-to-GDP gap, China could be dangerously close to a banking crisis that could threaten the future growth of the entire economy.

Is China’s Debt-driven Economy on an Unsustainable Path?

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), a widely-respected financial watchdog, has reported that China’s “credit-to-GDP gap” has reached 30.1. The credit-to-GDP gap is the difference between the credit-to-GDP ratio — which in turn bitcoin-miningis the the ratio of a country’s national debt to its GDP — and its long-term trend.

The 30.1 credit-to-GDP mark is considerably higher than all other major countries the BIS tracks.

It is significantly higher than the gap in Asian countries in 1997, during the region’s speculative boom. It’s also higher than the US subprime bubble before the Lehman crisis.

This indicator, from the work of economist Hyman Minsky, is important because it has proved to be the best single gauge of banking risk. It has consistently predicted financial crises — even though the expected result often takes longer than expected to materialize.

History suggests that if a country scores a 10 or higher on this index, then it usually merits closer monitoring of the situation. Also, studies of earlier banking crises around the world over the last 60 years appear to confirm this.

This puts China’s economic situation in perspective, as its score is more than three times higher than the danger threshold.

Additionally, outstanding loans have reached $28 trillion, as much as the commercial banking systems of the US and Japan combined.

Bitcoin Mining Operations at Stake?

China is the epicenter of Bitcoin mining, with a large majority of the network’s hashing power originating from the country. Bloomberg reported that China-based miners make up as much as 70 percent of Bitcoin’s total mining power.

Alaskan Man Arrested After $15,000 Ecstasy Package Intercepted Bitcoin Babe News

http://ift.tt/2cH9AVH

A 27-year-old Fairbanks man was arrested after US Customs intercepted his package containing 487 Ecstasy tablets.

The package, sent from the Netherlands, was initially discovered by Homeland Security. US Customs and Border Protection agents were then tipped off. The package was shortly thereafter opened by federal agents at a San Francisco USPS sorting facility. Investigation documents note that the package did not have a tracking number and was addressed to Dontell Rashad Jones in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Secure shipping channels carried the package of ‘Green Ghosts’ from San Francisco to investigators in Fairbanks. A Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit received the pills, repackaged them, and arranged a controlled delivery. According to the criminal complaint filed shortly after his arrest in early September, the CD was successful. After Jones accepted the package, local police obtained a warrant to search his property.

Jones was found with the opened package not long after delivery. The Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit reclaimed what the pills, amounting to 126 grams of Ecstasy. In Fairbanks, the pills sell for between $20 and $40 and have a total street value of $15,000. The quantity of drugs and estimated value provided by local law enforcement led to his Class A felony charge.

The Fairbanks man was charged with felony second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance. At the time of his arrest, Jones was still under the conditions of a prior fourth-degree assault charge. The criminal complaint makes a note of his prior charges and how the new arrest violates the agreement reached following the assault charges.

In Alaska, the penalty for a Class A felony is imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine up to $250,000.

Jones’s arrest reveals the kind of collaboration between government agencies similar to what has been seen in other busts. From the few details made publicly available, US Homeland Security was the first US agency to pick up the package. Homeland Security then collaborated with US Customs and Border Protection. US Customs and Border Protection worked with USPS and USPIS in San Francisco. An Alaska Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit was next in line. Fairbanks Police Department made the final move: the arrest.

At least six US agencies were involved.

Details regarding how Homeland Security got wind of the package have not been released. Based solely on acceptance of the package during a controlled delivery, a successful prosecution is likely. As seen in many recent raids, a successful controlled delivery is ample evidence for a conviction.

WINGS: The New DAO on the Block Says it Won’t Fail Like Slock.it Bitcoin News

In the wake of the Etherum-based Slock.it DAO’s catastrophic failure, new project Wings thinks it can make a DAO that is both better and more secure.

Also read: Bitmain CEO: Bitcoin Can Advance China’s Economy in a Big Way

WINGS: A New DAO

Instead of a “simple” venture capital platform, Wings provides a forecasting service. With this service, participants in the distributed autonomous organization (DAO) predict which submitted projects have the best chance of success. The goal of forecasting the success of proposals instead of directly funding them is to weed out the bad projects. Consequently, Wings developers say potential investors have a better gauge on a project’s promise — helping them make better investment decisions.

To encourage people to both make predictions and submit proposals, Wings has built a crypto-token to offer as a monetary incentive. Wings awards tokens based on how accurate a prediction is, or an account’s “forecast rating.” The success of an account’s proposal’s determine this rating.

Bitcoin.com sat down with the team behind Wings to talk about the project, what made them want to build a distributed organization, and how they plan to avoid the failures of Slock.it’s The DAO.

Bitcoin.com (BC):What is the inspiration behind Wings?

wings BitcoinWings (W): We are looking to open the amazing opportunity in launching companies under the DAO structure for the mainstream audience. By enabling the common hi-tech (and actually any other type) of companies to launch backing campaigns with the crypto audience, and solve the inherent trust issues with the legacy crypto funding (ICO, crowd sales, etc…) via the DAO model, we see the crypto DAO backing becoming a powerful early capital channel for new startups, products, and services.

We already had meeting with mainstream companies who working in different industries, we saw interest from their point of view. Blockchain opens for them new opportunities and new channels to earn early capital. We hope to see them on our platform in the future.

BC: Give us a basic explanation of how the system works. How are proposals submitted? How are participants rewarded? Does Wings have any functionality beyond forecasting, does it help projects get actual funding?

W: The first step for a project creator would be to submit a new proposal to the WINGS platform, via an easy step-by-step wizard. The process is similar to Kickstarter, very user-friendly, the creator enters the proposal content via rich formatting editor, uploads media such as phot...

Historic Day For Bitcoin As Bitcoin.com Pool Starts Mining Bitcoin News

Bitcoin is about to change for the better – Bitcoin.com’s own mining pool mined its first block today, running software that allows miners and nodes to set their own block sizes.

Also read: ‘Bitcoin Unlimited’ Reveals $500k Donation, Formal US Registration

First Block Mined Today

The Bitcoin.com pool mined its first block, block 430757, on Wednesday September 21, 2016.

This is a significant day in Bitcoin history, and one for future Bitcoiners to remember. While mining pools have come and gone over the years, this is important because Bitcoin.com uses the Bitcoin Unlimited protocol.

Bitcoin Unlimited is an alternative to the Bitcoin Core protocol most Bitcoin miners use. Unlimited’s key difference is it removes transaction block size limits from the protocol level and adds it to the transport level. This means those running the software can choose the size they like.

Bitcoin.com owner Roger Ver said:

Bitcoin.com is now the primary hub for Bitcoin advocacy, information and news. We also want to support Bitcoin’s growth into a worldwide economic force – and that’s exactly what we’re doing by starting this pool.”

Free Market, Freedom of Choice for Block Sizes

Blockchain Bitcoin UnlimitedBitcoin.com aims to solve one of Bitcoin’s chronic problems — its inability to scale. The existing Bitcoin network can only handle seven transactions per second, a laughably small number compared to major centralized payment platforms like Mastercard and PayPal.

As a result, many users report transaction delays of hours or even days — unacceptable for business-critical payments.

Proposals for scaling solutions exist, but none are available now or in the near future. Together with Bitcoin Unlimited and a pool of eager miners, Bitcoin.com is taking definitive action.

Transaction block sizes are now hard-coded with a 1MB limit. A passionate debate exists around calls for Bitcoin Core to increase it.

Bitcoin.com CTO Emil Oldenburg said there were no problems with bandwidth or speed on the pool’s first block:

“This is the first block mined with the Bitcoin Unlimited client using the eXpedited Blocks relay technology. This block was mined in the US, but got through the Chinese Firewall in a matter of milliseconds and then sent to the other Chinese pools.”

Nearly 400,000 uTorrent Accounts For Sale On TheRealDeal Market Bitcoin Babe News

http://ift.tt/2clbLve

In June, the uTorrent team issued a security alert advising forum members to change their passwords after a database breach. No follow-up information had been made available since the alert. The breach had been forgotten about, for the most part.

As of early September, that data breach has come back around to haunt uTorrent users. Nearly 400,000 uTorrent accounts just became available for purchase on TheRealDeal marketplace.

The database obtained during the initial breach is being sold by a user named “doubleflag” for $600. Doubleflag’s listing contains emails and passwords for 394,769 uTorrent forum users. “Out of a total of 394,769 accounts, some passwords are encrypted with Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1) and some with the weak MD5 hashes,” HackRead reports.

TorrentFreak points out that doubleflag claims the data was obtained from uTorrent in January 2016. The security alert from uTorrent did not come until nearly six months later. Although some of the numbers are incorrect, Haveibeenpwned.com also indicates the data was leaked in January. uTorrent did not explicitly say that data had been stolen in June. However, they failed to mention it had been stolen six months prior the the alert.

uTorrent’s 06/07/2016 “Important Security Advisory” announcement:

On June 6th, 2016, BitTorrent was made aware of a security issue involving the vendor which powers our forums.

The vulnerability appears to have been through one of the vendor’s other clients, however it allowed attackers to access some information on other accounts.

As a result, attackers were able to download a list of our forum users. We are investigating further to learn if any other information was accessed. Our vendor has made backend changes so that the hashes in the file do not appear to be a usable attack vector.

As a precaution, we are advising our users to change their passwords. While the passwords may not be used as a vector on the forums, those hashed passwords should be considered compromised. Anyone using the same password for forums as well as other places is strongly advised to update their passwords and/or practice good personal security practices.

Not much can be done if you happen to be one of the unlucky member of the $600 data breach. If the same password was used across multiple sites, now would be a wise time to change them. As the ill-timed security alert from uTorrent points out, “…practice good personal security practices.”

Accenture to Debut “Editable” Blockchain Next Week Bitcoin News

Accenture Editable Blockchains Preferred By Banks

accenture Last week, an executive from Accenture described Bitcoin’s immutability as a weakness. Now, the company has designed a distributed ledger platform to address this alleged fault. Accenture says data can be edited on this blockchain, but only under  “extraordinary circumstances.”

The prototype according to Accenture is immutable to its user base but, if necessary, designated administrators can “edit, rewrite, and remove blocks of information.” The company says it enables this feature with a new function called “chameleon.”

The hash function recreates algorithms that link blocks together with private keys. The new feature was created by Dr. Giuseppe Ateniese. Accenture’s Richard Lumb explains their motivation to create the editable blockchain, stating:

For financial services institutions faced with a myriad of risk and regulatory requirements, absolute immutability is a potential roadblock.

Accenture plans on showcasing the invention at Sibos 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Last week Accenture’s Richard Lumb gave Ethereum developers credit for being able to reverse the DAO attack. Accenture details that the prototype uses a permissioned blockchain protocol which many of its clients prefer.

Toward the Moon: Genesis Mining Sends the First Bitcoin Into Space Bitcoin Magazine

Bitcoin has come a long way since it was first introduced to the cyberpunk world by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, and now for the first time, space travel history has been made with the digital currency.

Genesis Mining, a major bitcoin cloud mining company, recently conducted the first peer-to-peer financial transaction in space.

Searching for a way to increase awareness of Bitcoin, while educating people about its benefits as the standard bearer for digital currencies, Genesis Mining decided that sending bitcoin into space was the perfect way to achieve this goal.

Speaking to Bitcoin Magazine, Marco Streng, CEO and cofounder of Genesis Mining, said that the Bitcoin community started using the catchphrase “to the moon” when the growth of the digital currency was rapidly escalating. For the company, this was their way of saying that they think this ambition is still possible.

“We hope its value and the value it returns to the world will continue to grow and we believe firmly that there are no limits to its success,” Streng said.

With growing interest in private space programs and the increased possibility of space tourism, Genesis Mining decided to demonstrate how easy bitcoin is to use by sending it into space. Streng adds, however, that sending it to the moon itself is still out of reach for them for the time being.

“While we knew that sending it to the moon may prove difficult in the short term, near space was a pretty great achievement for cryptocurrency so we decided to pursue the project,” he said.

Surrounded by the lush greenery of the rolling hills and blue skies of Sheffield, England, the team released their weather balloon carrying a 3D printed bitcoin and a Bitcoin wallet. Initially, the goal was to clear 20 km, which is above the Armstrong Limit (the altitude beyond which humans cannot survive without a pressure suit), and send a bitcoin to the wallet.

In space, there are many layers. What is known as “near space” is the region of Earth’s atmosphere that is between 20 and 100 km (65,000 and 328,000 feet) above sea level. The Armstrong Limit is roughly at 20 km, but it extends up to the Kármán Line, where outer space begins and astrodynamics take over from aerodynamics for flight to be achieved.

Once the weather balloon had reached 20 km, the team at Genesis Mining sent one bitcoin to the wallet to make it official, but they wanted to see if they could reach a higher limit.

“We hoped to get over 30 km, which we did,” said Streng. “Our partners let us know that 34 km was going to be the optimal height and that is when we sent the second coin.”

For the team, sending bitcoin into space helps to increase awareness about  the digital currency and demonstrate its ease of  use.

“We believe firmly in technology being a vehicle to make our lives better. Showing that Bitcoin can be a part of the growing private space enterprise is another step in that direction,” Streng said.

Two Germans Arrested For Selling Weapons On The Dark Web Bitcoin Babe News

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

A 25-year-old and a 28-year-old were arrested for allegedly selling lethal weapons on the dark web. According to the law enforcement authorities, one of them was a toolmaker who rebuilt non-lethal firearms, while the 28-year-old provided funds for the equipment and the material.

The two men from Stuttgart sold rebuilt lethal pistols and AK-47s originated from the former Yugoslavia and China. The latter firearms are considered as “weapons of war”. The duo also sold ammunition to the weapons they advertised. The two men were also charged with money laundering.

The alleged gun vendors were arrested shortly after the November 13 Paris terrorist attacks in 2015. During the house search of the 25-year-old, police found 16 firearms. Prosecutors say he allegedly sold weapons to an address in Paris. However, there is no evidence saying that any of the firearms sold by the duo were used in the attacks or even arrived at the French capital.

The November 13 terror attacks in Paris created some confusion regarding the dark net. Soon after the attacks, the Bild claimed that the terrorists purchased the weapons from a German dark web vendor. However, this allegation has not been proved.

The Paris terror attack made the Europol to conduct an investigation of the whole case. According to them, the Islamic State do not use Bitcoins and the dark net for their operations since they already have a better and safer option on social media platforms and on messaging services.

“The internet and social media are used for communication and the acquisition of goods (weapons, fake IDs) and services, made relatively safe for terrorists with the availability of secure and inherently encrypted appliances, such as WhatsApp, Skype and Viber. On Facebook, VKA and Twitter they join closed and hidden groups that can be accessed by invitation only, and use coded language,” the report said.

The 25-year-old and the 28-year-old men are standing before court awaiting their trial. They can face heavy charges and several years in prison for violating the Arms Act and the War Weapons Control Act.

In July, the Heidelberg District Court had already sentenced a 32-year-old to five years and six months since arms trade on the dark net. He used the vendor name “Dosensuppe”. Christian L. sold guns to many customers, including a “21-year-old man from Britain who plotted to use a sub machine gun to commit murder, a right wing radical that was previously responsible for a bomb attack, and a man who was seen posing in front of an Islamist flag with a Russian AK-47”.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) has already raised its concerns over dark net weapon sales and said stopping the trade “will be a great challenge for us all”.

Nigerian Students Scammed By Alabama State University Qntra

A group of 37 international students from Nigeria are suing Alabama State University over the school's practice of withholding scholarship funds sent by the Nigerian government for their benefit (archived). In their defense, the school alleges a mysterious official from the Nigerian government directed them not to disburse the remaining balance of the scholarships after tuition and required fees to the students. Per the conditions attached to the scholarships these funds were to be directed to the students so that they could pay their expenses incurred which are not billed by the university. The extent to which Alabama State managed to keep these students from accessing their scholarship funds however kept students from even paying tuition to take classes at the university during the summer term, because of instructions the University alleges it received from the mystery government official. The school further alleges the instructions directed returning surplus funds to a "Nigerian Government account." Sorry for your loss.

purseBitcoin use in India is growing rapidly, so Purse wants Indian residents to take advantage of its e-commerce platform. By the same token, the company said it is dedicated to providing a seamless shopping experience for bitcoin users.

Simon Denny: Exploring the World of Blockchain Through Art Bitcoin Magazine

Reimagining traditional finance to dreaming of alternative, self-sovereign futures has become possible with blockchain technology.

That’s according to Berlin-based New Zealand artist, Simon Denny, whose latest exhibition, Blockchain Future States at the Petzel Gallery in New York City looks at the cultural implication of what blockchain application across different sectors could mean globally.

Full-length, cut-out images of the leaders of three major blockchain companies — Digital Asset Holdings LLC, 21 Inc. and Ethereum — demand attention as they stand near globe-like objects with oversized special editions of the board game ‘Risk’ and Pokémon cartoons, highlighting what each company thinks needs to be achieved for a new world order.

The fact that contemporary artists are exploring the world of blockchain highlights the new status achieved by bitcoin’s underlying technology that surpasses the hype surrounding bitcoin.

Of course, while blockchain technology is gaining popularity in many parts of our day-to-day lives, it can still come across as a complicated subject. Through the use of art, though, audiences can better understand the technology and its global impact as it is combined with objects they are familiar with.

Speaking to Bitcoin Magazine, Simon said that there are many of interesting cultural and systemic debates focused on the technology.

“There seems to be a kind of land grab for the blockchain system that is happening across many spaces in technology and finance,” he said.

For somebody interested in culture, now seems to be the right time to make this exciting moment more accessible to people not immediately involved in the world of technology or finance, Denny said.

“I think that work that is being done by blockchain visionary companies right now has the potential to change some of the most fundamental societal building blocks from which our world is built,” he said. “Money, sovereignty, trust: These are the things which are potentially at stake here, and are being reimagined by very smart, very active people.”

Simon believes blockchain is the technologist’s solution for creating the building blocks of a more distributed global future as more people become dissatisfied with key institutions such as governance and finance.

“I want to open up the appeal of something that can seem quite complicated and technical to an outsider and make accessible some of that excitement to a cultural audience,” he said.

Initially, Simon wasn’t interested in bitcoin; however, it was only last year that he looked more into blockchain after making an exhibition that dealt with the history of hacking and focused on the cyberpunk legacy behind digital currencies.

“The idea that it was about automating verification, replacing elite groups and organizations with code, and code as law made me more interested,” he said.

As a result, his latest exhibition, Blockchain Future States, focuses on companies that deliver a contrast in their sectors and focus on blockchain. From capital markets and fiat currencies with Digital Asset Holdings, through West Coast technology and Bitcoin with 21 Inc., to a type of international anarchist/engineer and alternative currency with Ethereum, each position helps to establish the possibilities of blockchain technology.

However, while Simon states that while it’s easy coming up with the ideas for his exhibitions, executing them ca...
