Basil is one of my favourite herbs and it's always nice to be able to enjoy a lot of it in a recipe like this super tasty, quick and easy 20 minute Thai basil beef! This recipe it super simple! You pretty much just cook the beef, shallots, garlic and peppers before seasoning with the perfect balance of salty fish sauce, sweet palm sugar, spicy chilies and sour limes before adding all of that fresh basil! All said and done this recipe takes less time to make than it takes to cook the rice so you have a complete meal in 20 minutes! I generally make this with just the bell peppers as the veggies but I sometimes add things like broccoli, peas, etc for even more goodness! Serve this on coconut lemongrass jasmine rice to complete the flavour extravaganza of this 20 minute Thai basil beef!

Mouse Diet Studies Aren't Conclusive For Mice Let Alone People Weighty Matters

Among the biggest frustrations in scientific knowledge translation is the extrapolation of outcomes from mouse studies to humans. It's frustrating because most people aren't just large rodents, and yet those mouse studies and their resulting press/publicity, are often used to push agendas. And it happens with diet studies too.

Simply put, we can't make conclusions of human diet outcomes based on studies conducted in mice.

But can we even do so in mice?

Maybe not.

It seems like there are 3 huge confounders for mouse diet (and other) studies.

The first is that a mouse's living arrangements (eg. noise, bedding, light, the pH of their water, and more) can markedly affect study outcomes.

The second is fecal-oral eating. Yes, mice eat each others' feces, and if we're talking the impact of diet on health, knowing which mouse ate how much of whose feces and what said feces contained might matter.

And lastly there's this tweet by Emily Deans who was recounting Ronald Kahn's experiences that noted that strains of genetically identical mice have different metabolic responses to identical diets (which may speak to the living arrangement issue, or to differing microbiomes, or both).

All this to say, in free-living humans, diet studies are anything but simple, and even in captive mice, the control of confounding variables is challenging.

Are New Parenting Trends Enabling Children and Keeping them Dependent? Ready Nutrition

I grew up in the late 80s and I was obsessed with The Babysitter’s Club books. My best friend and I started a booming neighborhood business based on this popular young adult series. We each took care of different kids after school, on weekends, and even late nights while neighborhood parents went out to dinner or a movie. We got great reviews from everyone, and we made a lot of money, too.  The most “unusual” part? We were 11 years old.

Nobody batted an eye back in 1990 when my friend and I started our business. Besides taking care of other people’s kids, I used to stay home from the age of 9 when my parents worked out at a local health club. I also remember sitting in the car while my mom ran errands from about the age of 6. I used to spend long summer days wandering my suburban neighborhood with the directive to “be home before dinner.” I was a responsible and confident kid—I had common sense and wasn’t afraid to ask for directions or to talk to adults. I felt like I was a part of my community and my parents trusted me to make smart decisions. But in the last decade or so, the concept of “no child left alone” (check out this book by the same title) has become not only the social norm, but a legal one in the United States. There are many reasons for this, but a recent study is shedding light on why these attitudes have changed in recent years.

An alarmist media may be one likely cause.

While a child abduction by a stranger occurs just .00007 per cent of the time (or one in a 1.4 million chance annually) news coverage of these highly improbable and unlikely situations is shown on a massive loop and given a disproportionate amount of air time, amping up parents’ and children’s fears alike. Even if you are not influenced by media coverage, the completely sound choice to leave your 11, 12, or 13-year old child alone at a local park or even in a well-ventilated car on a mild day, can still get you arrested. In fact, the fears the media purports spreads to judges, police officers, and juries as well. I absolutely do not feel comfortable letting my kids play alone outside in a public place, even for short periods of time. This has nothing to do with a fear of abduction or with the fact that I don’t trust them to make sound decisions—it has everything to do with a fear of legal ramifications.

There are major repercussions for never letting our children out of our sight.

Childhood obesity rates are soaring because kids must remain indoors unless they are closely supervised by adults. Screentime has replaced sending your kids out to play and an overall “failure to launch” can be seen in college students (see the book How to Raise an Adult for shocking examples of college freshmen behaving like babies). Meanwhile, the number of young adults living at home beyond age 30 is growing every year.

A new study by Saint Louis University scientists found that bitter melon extract triggers a chain of events on a cellular level that stops breast cancer cells from multiplying and also kills them. According to lead researcher, “bitter melon extract modulates several signal transduction pathways, which induces breast cancer cell death. This extract can be utilized as a dietary supplement for the prevention of breast cancer.”

Protect Your Vehicle From an EMP with this Simple Strategy Ready Nutrition

ReadyNutrition Readers, there have been a tremendous number of world happenings that has placed all of us in a precarious situation.  The past several months have seen successive tests of missiles, with a nuclear test as well (Friday 9/9/16) by North Korea.  Iran and North Korea have been exchanging missile technology, supplemented by the Russians with technical advisors and materials.  China, too, has been developing their SLBM (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile) weaponry at a breakneck pace.

The military doctrine of both North Korea and Iran call for a first-strike against the continental United States using an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) generating warhead.  I wish to pen the caveat that I have been stating in my articles repeatedly for quite some time, now, hoping they will be taken into consideration:

A war would be kicked off with an EMP weapon detonated over the Continental United States, then a nuclear exchange, resulting in a World War.

That being said, there are numerous sites available for study of EMP effects as well as the nuclear threat capabilities of the countries previously mentioned.  Read the briefings of Dr. Peter V. Pry who heads the committee to assess the threat of EMP against the United States.  His writings and testimony before sessions of Congress between 2006 to 2009 are readily available and downloadable from the internet.  He also expounds on the fact that he is certain that North Korea has the capabilities of miniaturizing a warhead to deliver an EMP, and they have already done so.

I recently submitted a piece to SHTFplan.com that details the effects of an EMP on vehicles, as well as some sites to research.  In the interim, what can we do to reduce those effects?  One of the things is a grounding wire, a simple term that we can “complicate” further by expounding on measures (shoebox, field-expedient measures) that you can do…and that I have already done for myself…to give your vehicle a better chance against an EMP.

Micro Circuitry and Computer Chips in Vehicles Will be Problematic in an EMP

Firstly, the majority of the testing done by the government and private companies conclude that most vehicles will be unaffected by the EMP.  I wrote “most,” and the thing that it doesn’t take into consideration is the amount of complex micro circuitry and computer chips that exist in most cars after 1990.  The engine of the vehicle may remain intact; however, computer ignition systems and sensitive microcircuits that control a great deal of a vehicle’s internal functions could be fried instantaneously.  If the engine is fine, but it won’t start because the chip in the ignition is fried, well, the result would answer the question.

One of the possible solutions would be the grounding wire.  For decades all the way up to the present day, 18-wheelers have all utilized grounding wires attached to their frames both to protect from lightning strike and from static electrical discharge when they are delivering flammable cargoes such as fuel to filling stations or heating oil to homes.  It is this principle that you too can follow after, along with a grounding chain, to help protect your vehicle from the EMP.

Any day where a new study shows a potential cure for cancer is a good day, and scientists in Europe may have found a breakthrough for breast cancer. The most common cancer in women, around 1 in 8 American women will develop it in their lifetime; the clinical trial may have found a way to rid us of it once and for all in the future.

Research presented by Professor Nigel Bundred at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam revealed that they had tested the effectiveness of a pair of drugs known as Herceptin (a.k.a trastuzumab) and Lapatinib.

 

The two drugs are commonly used in breast cancer treatment already, but this is the first time they had been combined together and used before surgery and chemotherapy. What they found was they were able to eliminate some types of breast cancer in just 11 days.

 

Funded by Cancer Research UK, they aimed to use these drugs to combat a protein called HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) which affects the growth and division of cancer cells. It’s also more likely to return than other cancer types.

What also makes this treatment so appealing is the fact that it eliminates the need for chemotherapy and surgery. The temporary side effects like hair loss, vomiting and fatigue are also avoided, making treatment less impactful on the body. Chemo is not entirely effective, nor is it the right choice for a lot of patients, so any alternatives are welcomed.

Study Results

257 women with HER2 positive breast cancer were selected for the study, with half being put on the drug combo and the other half were the control group. What they found was that of those on the drug, 11% had no cancer cells remaining within two weeks and 17% of cases featured dramatically shrunken tumors.

 

Compared to the control group who were only given Herceptin, they were found to have 0% with no trace of cancer cells and only 3% showed a drop in tumor size. Clearly, the two drugs combined have a major effect on breast cancer cells as opposed to being used on their own.

 

The problem currently, however, is that Herceptin’s licensing makes it only available for use alongside chemotherapy and not alone. The results of this study may help to change that though.

Scientist in Europe has succeeded in finding a breakthrough for breast cancer, which can be a potential cure. Breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer in women. Approximately 1 in 8 women in America is to develop breast cancer during their lifetime. However, this clinical trial might have found a way to eliminate this type of cancer once and for all.

This treatment is very appealing because it eliminates the need for surgery and chemo. Additionally, it also allows the person to avoid side-effects like fatigue, vomiting and hair loss. Chemotherapy is not completely effective, and it is never the best option for patients, thereby alternative methods are always welcomed.

The Results from the Study

This study included 257 participants with HER2 positive breast cancer. Half of the participant were given the drug combo, and the second half were the control group. The results showed that from the candidates who were on the drug, 11% had no remaining cancer cells during the first two weeks and 17% had significantly shrunken tumors.

The candidates from the control group were given Herceptin, and it was discovered that only 3 % had shrunken tumors and 0% were with no trace of cancer cells. It is very evident that when the two drugs a combined, they are more powerful against breast cancer.

The big problem is that Herceptin is only licensed for use alongside chemo, but not alone. However, this may change thanks to this study.

At the end of the day, there is still a lot to be done, but researchers are getting closer and closer to discovering the cure for cancer.

I would like to begin by clearly stating that people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity need to meticulously avoid all gluten sources, but they do not need gluten-free junk carbohydrate ingredients in their place. This is the sort of self-destructive thinking encouraged by the gluten-free food industry. This industry makes billions by filling grocery stores with overpriced junk carbohydrates.

Don’t replace one problem with another. Removing gluten but replacing it with excessive carbohydrate intake is causing diabetes, dementia, high blood pressure, obesity (need I go on?) to soar.
